“Ear seeding” may sound like a curious, even funny term to those who are unfamiliar with the concept. To understand this service is to understand a perhaps better-recognized term: acupuncture. At Pua Manu MedSpa in Kapolei, Hawaii, our talented and highly qualified providers take an integrative approach—combining the best of modern medicine and technology with the best of traditional medicine to support our patients’ best health!
So, what is ear seeding?
Ear seeding, or ear seeds, is a twist on acupuncture that targets specific points of the body without using needles. In fact, this method of therapy is called “acupressure” or “auriculotherapy.” Specifically, the more than 120 acupressure/acupuncture points in the ear are targeted as a means of stimulating or jumpstarting the health and function of other parts of the body or systems. It has traditionally been applied in Chinese medicine to protect against and manage a wide array of ailments and health problems – from indigestion and nausea to chronic pain and sleeplessness.
How does it work?
We may compare ear seeds to acupuncture needles. Like these needles, ear seeds stimulate channels to aid in improving the frequency or severity of health issues without puncturing the skin. The seeds themselves resemble small, square-shaped bandages. They get their name from the ripened seed of a Vaccaria plant. The adhesive contains this seed, which will be placed precisely by one of our skilled and knowledgeable providers into the specific acupressure point. Each point should correspond with the condition/health concern that you are experiencing. Since the ears reflect the health of the internal organs, health problems manifest as visual changes in the color, shape, size, or tenderness of the ear. These changes serve as clues for our providers so we know exactly where to place the ear seeds for maximum benefit.
Are all ear seeds the same?
No. The most popular are Vaccaria seeds that attach to adhesive stickers. However, other options are available, which may be appropriate for individuals with allergies to the ingredients in common bandages and tape products (such as latex).
What can I expect?
Our licensed professionals identify the right positions for your ear seeds and then properly place them. So you can achieve maximum results and benefits and avoid damage to parts of your ears. It’s advised to gently rub the seeds (a little pressure is all it takes) to simulate the body parts connected to and affected by the associated acupressure points. Also, be sure to remove the seeds as recommended by one of our experts. While they may still be adhering well to your ears, they are not intended for long-term use due to the risk of irritation.
