Ptosis Surgery

Ptosis (Droopy eyelid) Surgery

Are you looking tired but you do not feel that way? As we age the upper eyelid starts drooping due to gravity giving the tired appearance. You maybe asked several times throughout the day by your colleagues and friends why you are looking so tired.

Sometimes the condition is so severe that it may interfere with your daily activities such as driving and reading or you may feel that you cannot open your eyes completely and you maybe compensating by raising your eyebrows. In these cases the procedure maybe covered by your insurance. You will need to come in for a medical examination and several tests will be performed to verify and confirm your case.

Ptosis surgery is an outpatient procedure done under local anesthetic. It takes approximately one hour and can be virtually painless. The excess skin is marked and the final incision will be located on the new eyelid crease which may not be visible when your eyes are open. Each person will have an individualized design and final position of the eyelids. The natural look is our ultimate goal.

What to expect and recovery period

Swelling of the upper eyelid can decrease significantly after 1 week as long as ice is applied diligently right after surgery for at least 5 days. Remaining swelling can take up to 1 year to resolve completely. Recovery will depend on each individual healing process. The incision is hidden in the eyelid crease and can be almost invisible after 1 year.
