Back off, “bacne”! A guide to back facials for hard-to-reach, acne-prone skin
“Facials” are not just for the face! This popular, multi-faceted aesthetic treatment is also ideal for other parts of the body, especially the back. Pua Manu Med Spa is excited to share information about this service with you, so you can gain confidence in your skin.

What is a back facial?
A high concentration of sebaceous/sweat glands and large pores is present on your back, making the skin in this area prone to clogging. Back skin is also prone to congestion from friction from clothing and items such as backpacks and purses. This skincare treatment at our medspa in Kapolei, Hawaii cleanses, exfoliates, and hydrates hard-to-reach, congested skin on the back. By unclogging pores and lifting dead skin cells with techniques such as steaming, masks, and extractions, your skin will look clearer, smoother, and more radiant.
Is a back facial right for me?
Your skin’s pores act as outlets to release sweat and natural oils (sebum). When these tiny openings become blocked by sebum, dead skin cells, dirt, and debris, it can lead to acne (or “bacne”). You may notice blackheads, whiteheads, and even inflamed or painful cysts. The pores may also appear larger because impurities stretch them. Lastly, the build-up of oils, dead skin cells, and other debris can lead to a dull, dry, and uneven complexion. The use of targeted products/ingredients, such as salicylic acid, helps manage active acne and protect against future breakouts. Routine exfoliation also helps shrink enlarged pores by removing impurities, making pores less noticeable. Exfoliating techniques help smooth rough areas and make the skin look brighter and healthier by resurfacing (removing old, dead skin cells that can build up on the surface).
What is treatment like?
Like all facial services, treatment is customized to your needs. A “standard” session might involve:
- Deeply cleansing hard-to-reach areas – Specialized products are applied to remove sweat, oils, and dirt from blocked and visible pores, acne, lackluster skin, and rough patches.
- Using warm steam to open up the pores – This step softens the skin and aids our estheticians’ ability to remove impurities.
- Applying a scrub or acid-based exfoliant – By removing dead and damaged skin cells, we encourage new, healthy ones and improve the overall texture and appearance of your skin.
- Treating active acne with extractions – As needed, our estheticians can safely perform manual extractions to clear clogged pores, including blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples.
- Finishing with a soothing mask – Treatment masks are personalized to your needs; for instance, a clarifying clay mask may be ideal for clients with active acne. Or, a nourishing cream mask can soothe rough, inflamed, and thirsty skin.
How often should I get a back facial?
To get maximum benefit, Pua Manu Med Spa recommends treatment sessions scheduled every 4-6 weeks. These sessions fit in well with your schedule, because they are associated with little to no downtime and side effects (other than minor redness and sensitivity that typically go away within 24-48 hours).
